Rohan Dennis Handed Suspended Sentence Over Wife Melissa Hoskins' Death

Posted : 14 May 2025

Former world champion cyclist Rohan Dennis has received a two-year suspended sentence after pleading guilty to a charge related to the death of his wife, Olympian Melissa Hoskins. The tragic incident occurred in 2023 outside their Adelaide home during an argument, when Dennis struck Hoskins with his car as she reportedly held onto the vehicle.

Although originally facing more serious charges, Dennis ultimately admitted to a lesser count of creating the likelihood of harm. The presiding judge ruled that while Dennis was not criminally responsible for Hoskins’ death, he had shown poor judgment in continuing to drive when it was unsafe to do so.

During sentencing, Judge Ian Press acknowledged Dennis' attempt to defuse the confrontation by leaving the scene but emphasized that his actions endangered his wife. The judge noted that Dennis should have stopped the car the moment it became a threat to her safety and criticized his failure to do so as inexcusable.

Victim impact statements revealed the deep pain felt by Hoskins' family, who expressed their sorrow but also a desire to move forward. Her mother acknowledged Dennis likely had no intention of harm, but pointed out that his temper needed addressing.

Speaking outside the court, Hoskins’ parents, Peter and Amanda, said they were relieved the legal process had concluded and hoped to maintain a relationship with Dennis for the sake of their grandchildren. They noted that, although they had not yet received a personal apology, they believed one would eventually come.

Hoskins, who represented Australia in two Olympics and was a world champion in team pursuit cycling, was widely mourned by the international sporting community. Dennis, who retired at the end of the 2023 season, won multiple medals throughout his cycling career, including Olympic and Commonwealth honours.
