Cristiano Ronaldo faces legal challenge in Iran for cheek kiss: Adultery laws at play

Cristiano Ronaldo might want to steer clear of Iran for the time being. According to reports in Iranian media, several lawsuits have been filed against the Al-Nassr star. The reason being his hugging and kissing of artist Fatima Hamimi on the cheek in gratitude for her gift of two paintings.
 
The potential consequence for Ronaldo could be a punishment of 99 lashes for adultery, stemming from physical contact with a woman while in a relationship. Ronaldo, the 38-year-old Portuguese goal scorer, has been in a relationship with girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez since 2016. They share two children, Alana Martina and Bella Esmeralda, and also have twins born via surrogate in 2017. Additionally, Ronaldo has a son born in 2010 with an unknown mother.
 
The moment between Ronaldo and Hamimi was shared when Al-Nassr traveled to Tehran to play Persepolis in an Asian Champions League group stage match. Hamimi, who reportedly has 85 percent paralysis and paints using her feet, was one of the many fans who gifted Ronaldo.
 
While Ronaldo signed a lucrative 2 1/2 year deal with the Saudi Arabian club worth a reported $75 million annually, he may have a chance at forgiveness if the judge deems that "the acts are not punishable or Ronaldo shows remorse," as reported by Marca. Al-Nassr will not be playing in Iran again during the group stage, but a potential return could be on the cards if both teams advance to the knockout stage.
 
This isn't the first time Ronaldo has faced legal issues. In 2017, he was charged with tax evasion and received a suspended two-year jail sentence along with a fine of €18.8 million, later reduced to €16.8 million. Furthermore, an attorney representing a woman who accused Ronaldo of rape in Las Vegas in 2009 has asked the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to reconsider the case's dismissal in June 2022 and reopen the civil case filed in 2018.
