Andy Carroll Reveals He Was Sexually Assaulted in 2021

Former England striker Andy Carroll has revealed that he was sexually assaulted at his home in 2021 while he was playing for Newcastle United. The 37-year-old disclosed the experience in his newly released autobiography, Owning It, explaining that he decided to include the account at the last minute after discussing it with his girlfriend, Lou Teasdale.

Carroll said the incident happened after a friend of his former partner visited his home to watch a boxing match. According to his account, the assault occurred while he was asleep, after which he removed the man from the house and contacted the police.

The attacker was subsequently convicted of sexual offences and sentenced to three years in prison. Carroll gave evidence during the court proceedings, which he described as an extremely difficult and humiliating experience.

Carroll said the incident continued to affect his daily life and made it difficult to concentrate on football. He explained that sharing his experience publicly was difficult but hoped that speaking about it could help someone who had experienced something similar.

The former Newcastle, Liverpool and West Ham striker earned nine England caps during his career. He is now a player and co-owner of National League South side Dagenham & Redbridge, having joined the club in 2025.
