Alexander Zverev, the defending champion at the Rome Open, believes he has regained his momentum after a challenging stretch that followed his loss in the Australian Open final. The world No. 2 admitted that his struggles earlier in the season — including first-round exits in Indian Wells and Monte Carlo — were due to burnout, as he continued competing without taking a break after his defeat to Jannik Sinner.
However, his title win in Munich in April has reignited his confidence and marked a turning point in his form.
Reflecting on his difficult start to the year, Zverev noted that both his physical and mental exhaustion took a toll on his performance.
He emphasized how the demanding travel and playing schedule in professional tennis leaves little room for recovery, mentally or physically. Recognizing his own limits, Zverev acknowledged that he needed time to reset and is now focusing on maintaining a positive outlook, drawing encouragement from his recent success.
Zverev also addressed the media’s criticism of his recent dip in form, expressing frustration with how quickly players are judged during difficult periods. He defended his world No. 2 ranking, pointing to consistent results and tournament victories as justification. With hopes of a strong showing in Rome, he remains determined to carry this renewed form into the French Open, confident that he can rise to the occasion when it matters most.
