Zverev Overcomes Bublik in Three-Set Shanghai Masters Thriller

Posted : 13 October 2026

Alexander Zverev survived a demanding encounter against Alexander Bublik to secure a 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 7-6 (7-1) victory at the Shanghai Masters on Tuesday. The German top seed advanced to the quarter-finals despite struggling with an ankle problem, recording his first match win since being assured of finishing the season as world number one.

The 29-year-old admitted that physical discomfort affected his movement during the contest, particularly from the second set onwards. Although he was pleased to progress, Zverev acknowledged that his ankle had begun troubling him again and made the match more difficult than expected.

Zverev will next face Australia's Alex de Minaur for a place in the semi-finals. The German will be hoping to recover physically before the next round as he continues his campaign at the prestigious ATP Masters 1000 tournament.

The match was closely contested from the outset, with both players relying on powerful serves to hold their opening service games. Zverev faced a set point before forcing a tiebreak, where Bublik failed to convert three consecutive opportunities to take the set. The German capitalised on the missed chances and secured the opener with an aggressive forehand at the net.

Bublik responded in the second set by breaking Zverev's serve in the fifth game. Despite producing several important backhands, the German could not prevent the Kazakh from levelling the match at one set apiece.

The deciding set again went to a tiebreak, but Zverev took control early, opening up a 6-1 advantage before sealing the victory with an ace. His composure in the crucial moments proved decisive in a match that lasted three sets and tested his physical resilience.

The victory came shortly after Zverev was assured of finishing 2026 as the year-end world number one. The achievement was confirmed following Carlos Alcaraz's defeat by Belgian Zizou Bergs in Shanghai on Monday, marking a major milestone in the German's career.

Zverev described the honour as special, explaining that reaching the top of the year-end rankings carries a different significance from winning individual tournaments. He also acknowledged the responsibility that comes with the achievement and said he was eager to finish the season strongly.

Elsewhere, Frenchman Arthur Gea advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating 15th seed Jakub Mensik 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. The 21-year-old produced another confident performance, overcoming the Czech's resistance before converting his first match point to secure the victory.

Gea, ranked 56th in the world, has emerged as one of the tournament's surprise performers. His earlier victory over US Open finalist Ben Shelton highlighted his potential, and the Frenchman has continued to impress against higher-ranked opposition.

He will next face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who advanced after overcoming Hubert Hurkacz 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) in a closely fought contest. Davidovich Fokina recovered from a difficult opening set and held his nerve in the deciding tiebreak to book his place in the last eight.

With Zverev battling physical discomfort and Gea continuing his breakthrough run, the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals promise compelling matchups as the remaining players pursue the ATP Masters 1000 title.
