Zverev, Alcaraz Cruise into the Australian Open Fourth Round

Posted : 17 January 2025

Second seed Alexander Zverev continued his dominant run at the Australian Open with a comprehensive straight-sets victory over Briton Jacob Fearnley in the third round. Zverev triumphed 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in 2 hours and 2 minutes, advancing to the fourth round where he will face the winner of the all-French clash between Ugo Humbert and Arthur Fils. The German's win marked his 28th Australian Open victory, moving him one behind Boris Becker for the most by a German player. Despite the dominant scoreline, Zverev praised Fearnley, recognizing his rise from college and the Challenger Tour to the third round of a  Grand Slam.

Zverev’s victory was built on steady and measured play, with key breaks coming at pivotal moments. In the first set, a double fault from Fearnley handed Zverev the break he needed to secure the opening frame. The second set saw both players exchange early breaks, but a double fault from Fearnley gave Zverev another opening, which he capitalized on to lead 5-4 before closing out the set. In the third set, Zverev recovered from an early break and took control, breaking Fearnley again before sealing the win.

Zverev, who has made significant strides in his career, is aiming to improve on his previous best at the Australian Open, which was a semifinal appearance. Last year, Zverev enjoyed one of his best seasons, but his Grand Slam achievements still include two runner-up finishes, at the 2020 US Open and the 2022 French Open. The 27-year-old German is eyeing his maiden major title, and with his recent form, he will be a strong contender in the coming rounds.

In the same session, third seed Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the last 16 after overcoming Nuno Borges in four sets, 6-2, 6-4, 6-7 (3/7), 6-2. Alcaraz, who is pursuing his first Australian Open title, showed off his powerful baseline game with 54 winners and nine aces. The Spaniard, aiming to become the youngest man in history to complete a career Grand Slam, will next face either Jack Draper or Aleksandar Vukic. With his impressive form and ambition to win in Melbourne, Alcaraz could be on course to make history by defeating Novak Djokovic in a potential quarterfinal showdown.
