Zverev Advances in Cincinnati as Williams Sisters Lose Doubles Comeback

Posted : 18 August 2026

Top seed Alexander Zverev battled through a tight contest against France’s Terence Atmane to reach the fourth round of the Cincinnati Masters. The German prevailed 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (8-6), recording his 46th ATP victory of the season after surviving two closely fought sets.

Zverev, the French Open champion and Wimbledon runner-up this year, faced an aggressive Atmane who repeatedly put pressure on the German. However, the top seed held his nerve in both tie-breaks before sealing the match with a powerful backhand winner down the line.

The biggest storyline away from the men's singles draw was the return of Serena and Venus Williams to doubles action. Playing together for the first time since the 2022 US Open, the sisters were beaten 6-2, 1-6, 10-8 by American Peyton Stearns and Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk.

The Williams sisters recovered strongly after dropping the opening set and appeared to have the match within reach after fighting back from 6-0 down in the deciding tie-break. Their comeback ultimately fell short, however, with a Venus double fault ending the contest. Despite the defeat, Serena described the reunion as a special and enjoyable occasion.

Fifth seed Alex de Minaur also progressed after overcoming Britain's Arthur Fery 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) in a match repeatedly interrupted by rain. The Australian will next face France's Arthur Fils, who defeated ninth-seeded Czech Jiri Lehecka in three sets.

Elsewhere, Italy's Flavio Cobolli fought back to defeat Alexander Blockx, while Spanish teenager Rafael Jodar continued his impressive run with a dominant victory over Chile's Alejandro Tabilo. Argentine Thiago Tirante, who had already eliminated Novak Djokovic, also advanced after beating Spain's Martin Landaluce.

In the women's draw, Elena Rybakina survived two lengthy rain delays before defeating Magdalena Frech in straight sets. Defending champion Iga Swiatek also recovered from a slow start to overcome Maria Sakkari, while third seed Jessica Pegula defeated fellow American Emma Navarro.
