Zheng Qinwen secured her first career win over world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka on her seventh attempt, advancing to the semi-finals of the Italian Open with a commanding 6-4, 6-3 victory. The Chinese star, who had previously lost six times to Sabalenka—including a straight-sets defeat in the 2024 Australian Open final—finally broke the pattern with a composed and confident performance in Rome, taking full advantage of her opponent's off-form showing.
Reflecting on her past matches, Zheng admitted she may have placed Sabalenka on too high a pedestal early in her career. She recalled watching the Belarusian play at the 2017 China Open and being told by her father to study Sabalenka’s technique, which she now believes contributed to an excess of deference in their encounters.
By approaching this match with a new mindset, she was able to treat Sabalenka like any other opponent and execute her strategy effectively.
The 22-year-old credited the clay surface for enhancing her comfort and patience during the match, noting it was the first time they had met on that surface.
The win not only ends Sabalenka’s nine-match winning streak on clay but also serves as a major confidence boost for Zheng ahead of the French Open starting May 25. She will next face world No. 3 Coco Gauff in the semi-finals, with a place in the final on the line.
