Zheng Qinwen Suffer Shock French Open First-Round Exit to Qualifier Chwalinska

Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen endured a disappointing return to Roland Garros as she was beaten 6-4, 6-0 by Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska in the first round on Monday.

The Chinese star, who won Olympic gold at the Paris Games, has struggled to regain top form due to a persistent right elbow injury that required surgery last summer.

Despite reaching the quarter-finals at Roland Garros last year, the 23-year-old was unable to find her rhythm in this year’s opener and received treatment for a foot issue during the second set.

Chwalinska, ranked 114th in the world and coming through three rounds of qualifying, produced a composed and dominant display, showing no signs of nerves on the big stage.

The Polish qualifier, who had already impressed in qualifying with two bagel-set wins, closed out the match convincingly to secure her place in the second round.

She will now face either Tatjana Maria or 23rd seed Elise Mertens as she continues her unexpected run in Paris.
