Posted : 19 August 2026

The 2026 Zenith Bank Team Tennis Tournament got underway on Monday at the tennis courts of Ikoyi Club 1938 in Lagos. The opening day featured several competitive matches as players began their campaign for places in the knockout stages.

The group stage is being played in a best-of-nine format. The competition will switch to best-of-three sets from the semi-final stage as the tournament moves towards its decisive rounds.

Players have been divided into different banking groups. The groups include Diaspora Banking, Prestige Banking, Scan to Pay and Zenith Easy Banking, among others.

One of the opening-day highlights saw former tennis section chairman Akeem Mustafa of the Zenith Aspire Group defeat current section chairman Victor Onyenkpa 6-3. Mustafa produced a strong performance to claim victory in the notable encounter.

Azubuike Okonkwo also secured a win for the Zenith Aspire Group. He defeated Hilary Eledu of Zenith Easy Banking during the opening round.

Kalada Kienka of Diaspora Banking produced one of the day's biggest results. He recorded a commanding 9-0 victory over Emeka Azinge of the Prestige Banking Red Group.

The Blue Group also produced closely fought encounters. Pascal Ebhohimen edged Uzor Nwankwo 5-4, while Thomas Ighodalo recorded an 8-1 victory over Jide Ntephe.

The opening matches provided an early indication of the competitive nature of the tournament. Players will need consistent performances during the group stage to secure progression into the knockout rounds.

Onyenkpa praised the standard of the opening day despite his defeat to Mustafa. The current tennis section chairman expressed confidence that the competition would become even more exciting as the tournament progresses.

“I am impressed with the events on the opening day and I am optimistic that the competition will get better in the days ahead,” Onyenkpa said.

The tournament is continuing at Ikoyi Club 1938, where players will compete for places in the knockout stages. The competition also brings together members across the different banking groups in a format designed to encourage both individual performances and team competition.

Attention will now turn to the remaining group matches. Players will be looking to build on their opening results and secure strong positions before the tournament enters its knockout phase.
