Yannick Hanfmann Stuns Flavio Cobolli to Reach Montreal Third Round

Yannick Hanfmann produced one of the biggest surprises of the National Bank Open in Montreal by eliminating sixth seed Flavio Cobolli in straight sets. The German battled through two tightly contested tie-breaks to secure a 7-6(5), 7-6(2) victory, ending the Roland Garros finalist's campaign in the second round.

The win marked a significant achievement for Hanfmann, who entered the contest with a modest record against Top 10 opponents.

Remaining composed throughout the match, the 34-year-old consistently challenged Cobolli's serve and capitalised on key moments, winning 41% of his first-serve return points to earn his first career victory over the Italian in their maiden ATP Tour meeting.

After the match, Hanfmann credited his mental approach for helping him overcome one of the tournament favourites.

He explained that facing a top-ranked player requires constant focus regardless of the scoreline, adding that staying calm during the second-set tie-break proved decisive in sealing the upset.

The victory sends Hanfmann into the third round, where he will face either 26th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry or Portugal's Nuno Borges. His impressive display continues a strong run of form and gives him another opportunity to build momentum at one of the ATP Tour's biggest hard-court events.
