2026 WTT Champions Doha: Aruna Quadri, Hana Goda Exit Early

Posted : 10 January 2026

African stars competing at the ongoing WTT Champions Doha have suffered early exits at the hands of their formidable rivals, ending their campaigns sooner than expected.

Nigeria’s top-ranked player, Aruna Quadri, led the list of early eliminations after falling 3–0 to China’s Liang Jingkun, the tournament’s sixth seed. The encounter was largely one-sided, with Liang asserting control throughout the match. Despite the defeat, Aruna showed flashes of his trademark power, suggesting he is gradually settling into the new season.

Egyptian sensation Hana Goda also endured a disappointing start, exiting early from the women’s singles event at the $500,000 tournament being staged at the Lusail Sports Arena in Qatar. Goda dropped the opening game 11–8 but responded strongly to take the second 11–5.

The third and fourth games were tightly contested, featuring extended rallies and high-level precision. Goda narrowly missed taking the third game before former world number one Zhu Yuling edged it 15–13. The fourth followed a similar pattern, with Yuling holding her nerve to close out the match 12–10, sealing a 3–1 victory.

Egypt’s Omar Assar was the first African to exit the tournament, losing 3–1 to Japan’s Shunsuke Togami on Wednesday, January 7. What could have been a breakthrough moment for Goda ultimately ended in defeat, despite a spirited performance against the vastly experienced Zhu Yuling, who capped a stellar 2025 season with victory at the United States Smash.

While disappointed, Goda continues to make history, remaining the only African player to reach the women’s singles quarter-finals at WTT Champions level, achieving the feat at Montpellier 2024 and again at Frankfurt 2025.

African attention now shifts to the upcoming WTT Star Contender Doha 2026, scheduled for January 13–18, where Aruna Quadri, Omar Assar, Hana Goda, and other African stars are expected to compete in another exciting showcase at the Lusail Sports Arena.
