Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) has partnered with the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) to launch a maternity fund program that will provide paid leave and fertility treatment grants for players on the women’s circuit.
The initiative, announced on Thursday, will allow eligible WTA players to receive paid maternity leave for up to 12 months, along with financial assistance for family planning. The program is expected to benefit over 320 players, marking a significant step in supporting female athletes who wish to balance their careers with motherhood.
Swiss Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic, who recently returned to the WTA tour after giving birth to her daughter, praised the development, calling it a groundbreaking move for women’s sports.
She highlighted the financial struggles lower-ranked players face when taking extended breaks and expressed pride in the WTA for being the first women’s sports organization to implement such a policy.
The initiative will require players to compete in a specified number of tournaments within a set timeframe to qualify for payments, ensuring a structured approach to maternity benefits.
Bencic also noted the increasing presence of mothers on the WTA tour, referencing her opponent at Indian Wells, Tatjana Maria, a mother of two. She emphasized that the initiative will encourage more players to embrace motherhood without fear of jeopardizing their careers.
Having recently secured her first title since returning from maternity leave, Bencic’s experience underscores the growing support for mothers in professional tennis. The move by the WTA, in collaboration with the PIF, signals a broader effort to promote gender equity and career sustainability in women’s sports.
