WTA Reduces Mandatory Tournaments for Top-50 Players in 2027

Posted : 01 October 2026

The WTA has announced changes to its 2027 calendar that will reduce the number of tournaments required for the world's top 50 players, responding to concerns over the demands of the women's tennis schedule.

Under the new system, top-50 players will be required to compete in four WTA 500 tournaments next year instead of the current six. Combined with their other mandatory commitments, this will give them a base requirement of 14 WTA tournaments plus the four Grand Slam events.

Players will also receive greater flexibility with their rankings. From 2027, they can replace one eligible WTA 1000 result with a stronger result from a WTA 500 or WTA 250 tournament. The changes will initially operate as a one-year pilot before the WTA assesses whether they should continue in 2028.

The adjustments were developed through the WTA Tour Architecture Council, a group involving players, tournaments and tour officials and chaired by world No. 3 Jessica Pegula. The WTA said the changes followed player feedback about scheduling pressures and the need for greater flexibility.

The WTA also announced a major prize-money change for 2027. All combined WTA 1000 tournaments will offer equal prize money to the corresponding men's events for the first time. Rome, the Canadian Open and Cincinnati will join Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid and Beijing in providing equal payouts.

The 2027 WTA calendar will feature 55 tournaments across 26 countries and territories. It will also include a new WTA 250 event in Manila, while the WTA Finals will move to Charlotte, North Carolina.

WTA chair Valerie Camillo said the organisation had listened to players' concerns about the demands of the calendar. Jessica Pegula likewise said the changes would give players more control over how they structure their seasons.

The WTA's move follows a similar adjustment by the ATP, which reduced the number of mandatory WTA-equivalent 500-level tournaments for its top 30 players from five to four beginning in 2026.
