The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has announced that chief executive officer Portia Archer has stepped down from her role after less than two years in charge. Her departure, which took effect on April 20, comes shortly before her contract renewal period, according to the organisation.
WTA chair Valerie Camillo informed staff, players, and stakeholders of the decision in an internal communication, noting that a transition plan is now underway. The governing body confirmed that further updates on new leadership arrangements will be shared in the coming weeks.
Archer, who took over as CEO in mid-2024 after a senior executive career in sports management, was responsible for overseeing the WTA’s daily operations and commercial strategy. During her tenure, she also guided the organisation through expansion into new markets and continued development of the women’s tour.
Her time in charge included managing key strategic decisions and addressing challenges within the sport, including commercial partnerships and global tournament planning. Despite these efforts, her departure marks a sudden leadership change for the WTA at a pivotal time for women’s tennis.
The organisation is now focused on stabilising its leadership structure ahead of the next phase of the tour’s development, with an official announcement on long-term succession expected soon.
