World No. 1 Iga Swiatek eyes rare "sunshine double" at Miami Open

Posted : 21 March 2024

Iga Swiatek, the current world No. 1, arrives in Florida aiming to achieve an extraordinary feat by clinching both the Indian Wells and Miami Open titles consecutively, a rare accomplishment known as the "Sunshine Double."

Among the small group of players who have accomplished this feat, only Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Steffi Graf have managed to do so more than once, with Graf remaining the sole woman to achieve the double-double, triumphing in 1994 and 1996. Swiatek, having secured her first double in 2022, has the opportunity to join this exclusive club if she can add the Miami trophy to her collection once again.

The Polish player demonstrated her dominance at Indian Wells, sweeping through the tournament without dropping a set and sealing the title with a commanding 6-4 6-0 victory over Maria Sakkari.

Despite her impressive performance in California, Swiatek remains cautious as she approaches the Miami Open, emphasizing a step-by-step approach and refraining from speculation about winning the trophy before even setting foot on the court for practice.

With her opening match scheduled for Thursday or Friday against Italian veteran Camila Giorgi, Swiatek acknowledges the challenges ahead but returns to Miami with a sense of peace and confidence. Unlike two years ago when she was striving to establish herself among the game's elite, Swiatek now feels she has nothing to prove and is content with her progress and achievements. Reflecting on her growth and maturity, Swiatek expresses a sense of tranquility, recognizing that she is in the right place and poised to continue her success on the tennis court.
