Victoria Mboko Says Serena Williams Comeback Decision Is Up to Tennis Icon

Posted : 29 May 2026

Canadian tennis prospect Victoria Mboko has said that any potential return to tennis by Serena Williams should be announced by the former world No. 1 herself, amid growing speculation about a possible comeback next month.

Williams, 44, has not competed since her final professional appearance at the 2022 US Open, where she fell one match short of matching the all-time record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles. She has since stepped away from the tour, though recent reports have linked her with a possible return during the grass-court season.

Media speculation intensified after claims that Williams could receive a wildcard entry for doubles at Queen’s Club and potentially partner with Mboko in London. However, the young Canadian insisted she would leave any confirmation to the tennis legend, saying the decision rests entirely with Williams.

Mboko, speaking after reaching the third round at the French Open, said she would respect Williams’ timing and allow her to control any announcement regarding a comeback, adding that she had no further details to share.

Williams previously stated she preferred the idea of “evolving” away from tennis rather than calling it retirement, though she briefly reignited comeback rumours after registering with the sport’s drug-testing program last year. She later denied any immediate return plans on social media.

The possibility of her return has generated strong reactions across the tennis world. Former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka said Williams’ presence would boost attention and excitement around the sport, noting her lasting influence on global audiences.

Osaka added that she would personally tune in to watch any comeback match, while also highlighting the inspiration Williams and her sister Venus provided throughout her career.

Reigning French Open champion Coco Gauff also expressed interest in a potential return, saying she regretted never having the chance to face Williams on tour and would welcome the opportunity for the sport.

Gauff added that even a rumoured comeback from a player of Williams’ stature would be significant for tennis, bringing renewed attention and excitement to the game.

Meanwhile, Williams’ sister Venus Williams returned to competition last year after a lengthy break and has previously said her comeback would have been even more special had Serena joined her on court.

Young American player Iva Jovic, part of the next generation inspired by Williams’ dominance, said she had never seen the legend live but grew up watching her career and would find it “incredible” to see her back in action.
