Venus Williams’ US Open Wildcard Sparks Debate Over Tennis Legacy and Merit

Venus Williams will return to the US Open singles draw at age 46 after receiving a wildcard, despite being ranked 611th in the world and enduring a lengthy run of defeats.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion has relied heavily on wildcards this season, prompting debate over whether her legendary status should outweigh current results.

Williams has not qualified for a Grand Slam main draw through her ranking since Wimbledon 2021, while her recent singles results have been poor.

However, tournament organisers continue to see significant value in her presence, with her star power helping generate media attention, ticket sales and wider interest in events.

At the US Open, Williams is set to face 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in the opening round. She will also reunite with sister Serena in the women's doubles after the pair received a wildcard, adding another major storyline to their return to Flushing Meadows.
