Venus Williams suffered an early exit at the Hobart International on Tuesday, losing in straight sets to Germany’s Tatjana Maria in a historic first-round clash. The matchup, featuring a combined age of 83, marked the highest combined age for a main draw match in WTA history.
The 45-year-old American struggled against the 38-year-old Maria, who is ranked 42nd in the world. Williams managed to stave off six of nine break points during an 87-minute battle but ultimately fell 6-4, 6-3. This defeat follows a similar early exit at last week’s Auckland Classic, highlighting the challenges of her limited recent play ahead of the Australian Open.
Maria, a former WTA Tour titleholder at Queen’s Club in 2025 and the oldest singles winner since Serena Williams in 2020, described the encounter as an honor. She revealed that her daughters, Charlotte and Cecilia, were likely cheering for Williams, one of their idols. “Everybody loves Venus. I love her too,” Maria said. “Playing her was a great experience. It wasn’t easy with the wind, but it was amazing.” Maria now advances to the round of 16 to face Hungary’s Anna Bondar.
Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, will turn her focus to Melbourne for the Australian Open, where she has received a wildcard entry five years after her last appearance. If she competes, she will become the oldest woman to participate in the season-opening major, which begins Sunday.
In other first-round action, Czech two-time Grand Slam winner Barbora Krejcikova was also eliminated. The former world No. 2, ranked 55th, fell 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7/4) to American Peyton Stearns after receiving treatment for her knee during the match.
Krejcikova, who missed last year’s Australian Open due to injury, will now watch Stearns advance to face Serbia’s Olga Danilovic, who defeated defending champion McCartney Kessler in three sets.
