Venus Williams Reaches US Open Doubles Quarterfinal, Coco Gauff Falls to Osaka

Posted : 02 September 2025

Venus Williams extended her remarkable run at the US Open on Monday, advancing to her first Grand Slam doubles quarterfinal in nearly a decade. The 45-year-old teamed up with Canadian star Leylah Fernandez to defeat Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova and China’s Zhang Shuai 6-3, 6-4.

The victory marks Williams’ first appearance in a Grand Slam doubles quarterfinal since 2016. Her participation came after US Open organizers extended her a late invitation to compete in the doubles event, which she once dominated alongside her sister Serena.

Williams later revealed that Serena, who retired in 2022, has been “coaching from afar.” She explained that her younger sister gave her a pep talk earlier in the day. “She told me, gave me a pep talk and made sure to call me today,” Williams said. “She’s so excited and so nervous watching, with the kids cheering too. They’re all supporting us from home.”

After the win, Williams joked that Serena should come to New York for the next match. “If she came, it would be a dream for both of us. We’d have her on court coaching, maybe even hitting,” she laughed. The Williams-Fernandez duo could face top seeds Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend in the next round.

Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, only recently returned to competition at the Washington Open in July after 16 months away from the tour. She has hinted that the US Open may be her final tournament of the season.

Gauff’s Campaign Ends Against Osaka

Meanwhile, Coco Gauff suffered a disappointing exit after a straight-sets defeat to Naomi Osaka. The Japanese star powered to a 6-3, 6-2 win in their highly anticipated fourth-round clash of former champions.

Gauff admitted she felt “a little bit empty” during the match despite positive momentum earlier in the tournament. “I woke up today thinking it would be a good day, but once I was on court, I don’t know what happened,” she said.

The 21-year-old’s preparations were complicated by recent changes to her coaching team aimed at improving her serve. While she noted signs of progress in that area, her trademark return game faltered badly against Osaka.

Reflecting on her performance, Gauff emphasized growth over results. “Whatever happens for the rest of the year, I just want it to be improvement. I don’t care about results-wise,” she explained. She added that, at just 21, she has time to refine her game and hopes to build consistency over the next few years.
