Venus Williams was beaten in three sets by Magda Linette on Tuesday at the Auckland Classic as the American legend gears up for a historic appearance at the Australian Open at age 45. Williams showed flashes of the skill that earned her seven Grand Slam singles titles but eventually succumbed to the 52nd-ranked Linette, who won 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
The crowd gave Williams a warm ovation as she left the court. She will now travel to Hobart for another warm-up event ahead of the first Grand Slam of the year, where she will be the oldest woman ever to compete in Melbourne, having received a wildcard entry.
This match marked Williams’ first competitive singles outing since the US Open in August, after playing only sporadically in recent years. She had also competed in doubles in Auckland on Monday alongside Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina.
During the match against the 33-year-old Linette, Williams showcased her experience, hitting four aces in the second set to force a decider. However, the former world No. 1, now ranked 582, lost momentum in the third set, with Linette breaking her serve twice to advance to the second round.
Linette, who had lost both of her previous matches against Williams, praised the American’s performance. “She was really moving well, hitting well, especially when running to the open space,” Linette said. “I had to stay calm, be more solid, not make too many mistakes on my side.”
