Five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams suffered a first-round exit at the Bad Homburg WTA grass-court tournament on Monday after a dramatic three-set defeat to Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu. The 46-year-old, who received a wildcard entry, struggled early in the match but fought back to push the contest to a deciding set.
Williams lost the opening set 6-2 before responding strongly to take the second 6-4, showing resilience and experience. In the final set, she appeared on the verge of victory while leading 5-3 and holding match points, but Begu recovered impressively to force a tie-break and eventually sealed an 8-6 win in the decider.
Despite the defeat, Williams is expected to feature in doubles at Wimbledon alongside her sister Serena Williams when the Grand Slam begins next week.
Elsewhere in the draw, sixth seed Naomi Osaka advanced comfortably with a straight-sets victory over Poland’s Magdalena Frech, winning 6-4, 6-1. The match was tightly contested early on, but momentum shifted after a rain delay at 5-4 in the first set, after which Osaka dominated proceedings.
The four-time Grand Slam champion has yet to win a grass-court title, with her best result on the surface coming at the Nottingham semifinals in 2018. Nevertheless, her strong performance in Bad Homburg signals encouraging form heading into the grass season.
