Daniel Adeleye and Abubakar Yusuf were crowned men’s doubles champions at the ongoing VEMP National Open Tennis Championship, following a hard-fought victory over Canice Abua and Musa Mohammed on Friday. The intense final, held at the National Tennis Centre, Package B of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, ended 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 in favor of Adeleye and Yusuf.
The winning duo started strong by taking the first set 6-3, but their opponents bounced back to win the second set 6-4. The decisive match tiebreak saw both teams go head-to-head, with Adeleye and Yusuf holding their nerve to seal the win at 10-8.

Speaking after the match, Adeleye, who hails from Ekiti State, expressed joy at the victory. “I congratulate myself and my partner for this strong performance. We executed our game plan perfectly. I wasn’t even able to train before coming due to illness, so this win means a lot. Now, I’ll focus on the singles final tomorrow and hope to lift another trophy.”
In the women’s singles category, Khadijat Mohammed continued her impressive form with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Mary Udofa in the semifinals, booking a place in the final against Etoro Bassey.

The tournament, which features 192 players across men’s and women’s singles and doubles categories, continues to serve as a crucial platform for identifying and nurturing tennis talent in Nigeria.
