Botic van de Zandschulp progressed to the next round at Indian Wells after Nick Kyrgios was forced to retire from their match due to a right wrist injury. Kyrgios, who was playing on a protected ranking after missing 18 months due to knee surgery and wrist reconstruction, had fought back from two breaks down to force a tiebreak in the first set but ultimately lost it.
In the second set, he visibly struggled with discomfort before deciding to withdraw while trailing 3-0. Van de Zandschulp expressed sympathy for Kyrgios, acknowledging the Australian’s struggles in recent years.
The Dutch player, currently ranked 85th, will now face five-time champion Novak Djokovic, hoping to claim another big scalp after defeating Carlos Alcaraz at last year’s US Open and Rafael Nadal in his final career match.
Meanwhile, teenage Brazilian Joao Fonseca continued his rise, overcoming Britain’s Jacob Fearnley in three sets. The 18-year-old, who became the 10th-youngest ATP champion in history with his Argentina Open victory last month, recovered from a third-set deficit to win five straight games and secure the match.
In the women’s draw, Belinda Bencic made an impressive start, dismissing Tatjana Maria 6-1, 6-1 in just over an hour. The Swiss star, who returned from maternity leave last year and won the Abu Dhabi title in February, highlighted the challenges posed by windy conditions in the match.
Elsewhere, Japanese newcomer Moyuka Uchijima upset former US Open champion Emma Raducanu 6-3, 6-2, earning a second-round clash with world No 3 Coco Gauff. Raducanu, returning to competition after a troubling stalking incident in Dubai, admitted she struggled with Uchijima’s unpredictable shot variations rather than any lingering mental distractions.
