Paraguayan qualifier Adolfo Daniel Vallejo produced a major upset at the Madrid Open, defeating former world No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round. The 21-year-old described the moment as surreal, saying it felt like he was “living in a movie” as he celebrated one of the biggest wins of his career.
Vallejo, who broke into the top 100 for the first time last month after a strong start on the Challenger circuit, is competing in his first Masters 1000 event. He also made history as the first Paraguayan player to feature in Madrid Open history and will next face American 17th seed Learner Tien.
Elsewhere in the men’s draw, former world No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas narrowly escaped defeat, edging out American qualifier Patrick Kypson in a tight three-set battle. He now moves on to face eighth seed Alexander Bublik in the next round. Meanwhile, French veteran Gael Monfils played what is expected to be his final Madrid Open match, falling in straight sets to Camilo Ugo Carabelli.
In the women’s draw, world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka returned to clay with a win, extending her winning streak to 13 matches after defeating Peyton Stearns 7-5, 6-3. Despite a high number of unforced errors, the defending champion recovered in key moments to secure her place in the third round, where she will face Jaqueline Cristian.
World No. 2 Iga Swiatek also progressed comfortably, beating Daria Snigur 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour. The former Madrid champion dominated early and maintained control throughout, continuing her push for a first clay title since her Roland Garros triumph nearly two years ago.
There were also notable results elsewhere, as Hungary’s Anna Bondar stunned seventh seed Elina Svitolina for the biggest win of her career, while Belinda Bencic advanced smoothly with a straight-sets victory over Petra Marcinko.
