Defending men’s champion Jannik Sinner advanced to the third round of the US Open on Thursday with a commanding victory, while Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek showed resilience to stay in the tournament.
Sinner continued his dominant run on hard courts, brushing aside Australia’s Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 to extend his Grand Slam winning streak on the surface to 23 matches. The Italian top seed is aiming to become the first man to successfully defend the US Open title since Roger Federer’s five-year streak from 2004 to 2008.
“I’m very happy with how I managed these matches,” said Sinner, who faces Canada’s Denis Shapovalov next. “I still want to improve my serve, but overall I feel comfortable.” Sinner has already reached the final of all three Grand Slams this season, winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon while falling only to Carlos Alcaraz at Roland Garros.
Elsewhere in the men’s draw, Alexander Zverev eased past Jacob Fearnley in straight sets, while Lorenzo Musetti overcame David Goffin. Andrey Rublev defeated American wild card Tristan Boyer to book a clash with Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong, who continued his historic run by defeating Adam Walton to reach the last 32—the first Hong Kong man ever to achieve that milestone. In a late-night thriller, American 14th seed Tommy Paul edged Portugal’s Nuno Borges in five sets, finishing close to 2 a.m.
In the women’s draw, Coco Gauff had to dig deep in an emotional win over Donna Vekic, 7-6 (7/5), 6-2. Struggling with her serve and reduced to tears during the match, Gauff leaned on her fighting spirit and the presence of gymnastics icon Simone Biles in the stands for inspiration. She now faces Magdalena Frech in round three, with a potential blockbuster meeting against Naomi Osaka looming in the last 16.
Osaka, a two-time US Open champion, looked sharp in a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Hailey Baptiste. The Japanese star, seeking her first deep Grand Slam run since 2021, will meet 15th seed Daria Kasatkina in the third round.
Earlier, world No. 2 Iga Swiatek was tested by Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands before prevailing 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Swiatek acknowledged her struggles in the second set but reset effectively to close out the match. She will next face Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya for a place in the last 16.
Meanwhile, Czech 11th seed Karolina Muchova continued her strong New York record, edging past Sorana Cirstea in three tight sets to reach the third round once again.
