The three-day event drew a vibrant crowd and enthusiastic participation from young athletes, parents, coaches, and key stakeholders in Nigerian tennis. The initiative kicked off with a two-day clinic focused on scouting, skill development, and mentorship, followed by a competitive tournament aimed at exposing participants to high-level play and potential pathways to scholarship opportunities.
Founder Sadiq Tswako expressed pride in the event’s impact, stating:
“The goal of the Tswako Foundation is to discover and nurture hidden talents and provide platforms for their growth. We want to infuse confidence in these young players and boost grassroots tennis nationwide.”
The event earned praise from notable attendees including Mr. Sunday Samuel, Head Coach of the FCT Tennis Association, who called the initiative “a critical step in raising the standards of youth tennis in Nigeria.”
Among the special guests was Diana Mary Nsan, Media Aide to the Minister of State for Industry, Trade, and Investment, who attended as a proud parent of four participants. “Whether they win or lose, the experience they’re gaining at this stage is priceless,” she said.
Also present was Coach Natasha Sauerborn, a member of the Foundation’s team from New York, USA, who reinforced the commitment to sports empowerment: “We are dedicated to creating life-changing opportunities for these young athletes through tennis.”
The President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), Dayo Akindoju, applauded the Foundation’s grassroots focus and encouraged more stakeholders, including ex-internationals, to invest in youth tennis development.
The tournament featured multiple age categories for both boys and girls, with the following young athletes emerging as champions:
All finalists received tennis rackets, shoes, and bags as part of the Foundation’s effort to encourage continued participation in the sport.
The well-attended tournament not only celebrated emerging talent but also emphasized the Foundation’s role in empowering the next generation of Nigerian athletes.
With strong endorsements from tennis authorities, parents, and international coaches, the Tswako Foundation’s grassroots event has set a high standard and is expected to become a recurring feature in Nigeria’s youth sports calendar.
