Teenage sensation Khadijat Mohammed will seek back-to-back national titles after cruising into the final of the Rainoil National Tennis Open, setting up a fiery battle against Bright Emmanuel.
For Bright Emmanuel, it will be another opportunity to reignite a long-standing rivalry with Mohammed at the junior level.
To book her final spot today at Ikoyi Club, Lagos, Mohammed—still fresh from capturing the Dala Hard Court title last November in Kano—dismissed Itoro Bassey 6-3, 6-4, while Emmanuel defeated top player Blessing Omotayo 6-2, 6-3.
Emmanuel, who trains at the Apapa Tennis Club, is making her first-ever senior national championship final and will relish the opportunity to get one over her arch-rival.
In the men’s category, tournament number one seed and Nigeria’s Davis Cup top player, Christopher Bulus, made light work of Ikechukwu Iloputa, winning 6-2, 6-0 to cruise into the final.
The U.S.-based Bulus will now face national teammate David Adeleye, who stopped giant-killer Abayomi Phillips 6-1, 6-1 in another semifinal today.
The final matches will bring an exciting week of tennis at the Rainoil National Open at Ikoyi Club, Lagos, to a close.
