German teenager Justin Engel stunned James Duckworth in the opening round of the Stuttgart Open, clinching a dramatic 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) win in his first professional appearance on grass. Ranked 281 in the world and with limited ATP Tour experience, the 17-year-old had previously played just five tour-level matches, mainly competing on clay and hard courts in Challenger events.
Despite the unfamiliar surface and a bout of dizziness during the deciding set, Engel rallied from a break down to seal the match in just under two and a half hours, capping the moment with an emotional celebration.
Following his breakthrough win, Engel expressed pride in his performance, saying he was thrilled with the result and eager for his next match. The Stuttgart Open also saw other rising talents make their mark, including 19-year-old American Learner Tien, who progressed after his opponent Yoshihito Nishioka retired with the match tied at one set apiece. French player Arthur Rinderknech pulled off a notable upset, defeating fifth seed Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 despite a tough season leading into the tournament.
France enjoyed further success as Corentin Moutet overcame wildcard Fabio Fognini in three sets, and Quentin Halys edged Lorenzo Sonego after dropping the first set. However, veteran Gael Monfils fell short, losing to American seventh seed Alex Michelsen in a tight three-set encounter. The tournament’s top seeds—Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, and Felix Auger-Aliassime—are set to join the action in the second round after receiving byes.
