The 2025 ITTF Africa West Regional Championships have kicked off with thrilling displays of talent, teamwork, and sportsmanship, setting an electrifying tone at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.
As the four-day tournament progresses, attention is now turning to the finals of the team events, scheduled for later today. One of the standout moments on the opening day came from Côte d’Ivoire’s Audrey Diama and Eve Ndah. While they did not claim victory in the women’s event, their spirited play and technical prowess hinted at strong future potential.
Team Nigeria, as expected, dominated Group 1 with emphatic victories over Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire. Players Matthew Kuti, Taiwo Mati, and Abdulbasit Abdulfatai led the charge, delivering commanding performances to secure Nigeria’s spot at the top of the group.
After receiving a walkover win against Liberia, Nigeria’s men returned to defeat Côte d’Ivoire 3-1, sealing a place in the semifinals. In Group 2, the battle for qualification remains intense, with Ghana, Togo, Guinea, and Benin Republic locked in close competition.
The opening ceremony brought vibrancy and excitement, featuring a march-past by participating nations and speeches from distinguished guests. Teams from Ghana, Benin Republic, Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, and Burkina Faso added color and energy to the proceedings.
Ferdinand Sonou, Vice President of ITTF Africa West, expressed appreciation to Nigeria and Lagos State for their hosting efforts.
“I warmly thank the Nigerian and Lagos State authorities, as well as the organisers, for their immense commitment to the success of this event,” he said. “These championships go beyond sport. They celebrate unity, diversity, and the shared values of sportsmanship in West African table tennis. This Lagos edition is a key milestone. It represents our resolve to promote table tennis, preserve culture, and inspire athletes to achieve more while honouring tradition.”
NTTF President Ishaku Tikon, represented by Secretary-General Olusoji Akanmu, also delivered a welcome speech in which he praised Lagos State for its consistent support. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to developing table tennis across the West African region.
