Taylor Fritz advanced to the second round of the Australian Open with a commanding 6-2, 6-0, 6-3 victory over Jenson Brooksby. The world number four breezed through the match in just 1 hour and 33 minutes, demonstrating his superior baseline game and powerful serves.
Fritz, who made it to the quarter-finals last year, praised his solid performance and credited his hard work for his continued improvement. He will next face either Borna Coric or Cristian Garin in the next round.
Brooksby, returning from a 13-month doping suspension and wrist surgeries, struggled against the American's relentless attack. Fritz broke Brooksby twice early in the match and then dominated the second set, earning another double break for a 4-0 lead.
Brooksby, playing his first tournament since the 2023 Australian Open, couldn’t find a rhythm and was ultimately overwhelmed. Fritz, who reached the US Open final in 2023, is now positioned as a strong contender for the title in Melbourne, with American men aiming to end a long title drought in Australia.
In a thrilling five-set encounter, French veteran Gael Monfils triumphed over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in 3 hours and 46 minutes. The 38-year-old Monfils, fresh off becoming the oldest ATP singles champion at the Auckland Classic, won 7-6 (9/7), 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 6-7 (5/7), 6-4.
Monfils looked to have the match under control after taking the first two sets, but Mpetshi Perricard mounted a fierce comeback, saving match points in the third set. The Frenchman’s experience ultimately guided him to victory, securing a place in the second round for the 17th time.
Daniil Medvedev, known for his fiery temperament, survived a scare against Thai qualifier Kasidit Samrej in another five-set battle. After losing his cool and smashing his racquet in the third set, Medvedev regrouped to win 6-2, 4-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
The fifth seed was close to losing after dropping the second and third sets, but his experience in five-set matches allowed him to bounce back. Medvedev’s match was briefly interrupted to fix the net, and though he struggled at times, he eventually overpowered Samrej in the final two sets. Medvedev, a three-time finalist in Melbourne, now aims to continue his quest for the title.
