Tatjana Maria Upsets Jasmine Paolini as Eastbourne Open Gets Underway

Posted : 24 June 2026

Germany’s Tatjana Maria produced one of the biggest surprises of the opening round at the Eastbourne Open, defeating top seed Jasmine Paolini in straight sets. The experienced 37-year-old claimed a 6-4, 6-3 victory over the Italian, ending Paolini’s campaign before it could gather momentum ahead of Wimbledon.

Despite entering the tournament ranked well outside the world’s top 100, Maria demonstrated the value of her grass-court expertise against the world number 14. Paolini, who reached both the Wimbledon and French Open finals in 2024, was unable to find a way past the German’s variety and composure throughout the contest.

After the match, Maria admitted it was a difficult encounter given her friendship with Paolini off the court. She revealed that their families know each other well and said she was pleased to recover after a slow start to secure another significant victory over a highly ranked opponent.

Elsewhere in the women’s draw, former champion Madison Keys made a successful start to her bid for a third Eastbourne title. The American defeated Australia’s Talia Gibson 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the next round. Keys reflected on her strong connection with the tournament, noting that Eastbourne was the venue where she captured her first WTA title more than a decade ago.

In the men’s competition, Britain’s Giles Hussey delivered an impressive performance to defeat Matteo Arnaldi 6-4, 6-2. Hussey, who came through the qualifying rounds to reach the main draw, continued his excellent record at Devonshire Park by earning another victory over a top-100 opponent.

Arnaldi was making his return after illness forced him to withdraw from his scheduled match at the French Open earlier this month. However, the Italian was unable to find his rhythm against Hussey, who will now face France’s Quentin Halys in the next round.

Halys entered the draw as a lucky loser after Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca withdrew from the tournament because of a shoulder injury, opening the door for the Frenchman to continue his Eastbourne campaign.
