Tatjana Maria delivered a remarkable comeback story at Queen's Club on Sunday, becoming the oldest champion of a WTA 500 tournament at 37. The German qualifier defeated Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 6-4 in the final, earning the fourth singles title of her career and her first since winning in Bogota in 2023.
In what was the first women's tournament held at Queen's since 1973, Maria's victory not only etched her name in history but also symbolized resilience, tenacity, and late-career brilliance.
Arriving in London on a nine-match losing streak, Maria had to navigate two rounds of qualifying just to enter the main draw. But once inside, she deployed her signature slice-heavy style to full effect, taking down seeded opponents including Karolina Muchova, Elena Rybakina, and reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys.
Her triumph was not just about tennis—it was a personal milestone witnessed by her husband and daughters, making her second career grass title deeply emotional and inspiring.
Maria’s win also ended a long German drought, making her the first from her country to win a WTA 500 event since Angelique Kerber in 2018. Ranked 86th in the world, she controlled the final through consistency and tactical brilliance.
Although Anisimova showed flashes of her past form, the American’s unforced errors and Maria’s relentless defense proved decisive. With this win, Maria secured a £120,000 cheque and gained a significant momentum boost ahead of Wimbledon, where she famously reached the semifinals in 2022.
For Anisimova, the result was a reminder of both how far she has come and how much further there is to go. Once a teenage prodigy who reached the French Open semifinals in 2019, her career has since been marred by mental health struggles and a lengthy hiatus.
Her recent resurgence included a title in Qatar, but Maria’s experience and strategic poise on grass were too much to overcome. As Wimbledon looms, both players leave Queen’s with renewed motivation—but it is Maria who departs with the title, history, and a legacy-enhancing achievement.
