Iga Swiatek, the world number two, cruised into the third round of the Australian Open on Thursday, setting up an exciting encounter with 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu. Swiatek dominated Rebecca Sramkova, ranked 49th in the world, with a 6-0, 6-2 win on Rod Laver Arena.
The Polish player broke Sramkova’s opening service game and controlled the match from start to finish, wrapping up the victory in just one hour. Swiatek’s efficient play saw her win 64% of points off Sramkova’s first serve, making it a one-sided affair.
In contrast, Raducanu faced a tougher challenge on the nearby Kia Arena against her close friend Amanda Anisimova. Raducanu, who had never advanced beyond the second round in Melbourne, had to dig deep in a back-and-forth match, eventually winning 6-3, 7-5.
The British player’s resilience paid off, overcoming multiple breaks from Anisimova to secure the win. After battling injuries that sidelined her for most of 2023, Raducanu's victory marked a significant step forward in her return to form.
Swiatek was pleased with her performance, stating that she felt solid and focused throughout the match. Despite her dominance in the first round, she is aware of the challenges ahead, particularly with the upcoming match against Raducanu.
Raducanu, now ranked 61st, is eager for the opportunity to face Swiatek, viewing it as a chance to test her game against one of the top players. She is approaching the match with a "nothing to lose" mentality, ready to give her best despite the challenges she’s faced recently.
While Swiatek has struggled to make a deep run in Melbourne, with her best result being a semi-final appearance in 2022, she has made adjustments to her game. She now works with Wim Fissette, Naomi Osaka’s former coach, who has been instrumental in helping her improve her Australian Open performance. Swiatek praised Fissette’s understanding of the challenges women face on tour, adding that his support has been invaluable as she aims for a better result in Melbourne this year.
