Former world No. 1 Iga Swiatek fought back from a set and 5-2 down to defeat Croatia’s Donna Vekic 4-6, 7-6(7-0), 6-2 and reach the China Open last 16.
Swiatek seized control by winning the second-set tiebreak without dropping a point before completing the turnaround in the decider. She will next face American teenager Iva Jovic for a place in the quarter-finals.
Home favourite Zheng Qinwen also advanced after another demanding three-set battle, beating Marie Bouzkova 7-6(7-3), 4-6, 7-5. The Chinese star has now gone the distance in all three of her matches and will meet Alina Charaeva, who eliminated world No. 1 Elena Rybakina earlier in the tournament.
In the men's draw, Alex de Minaur reached the final after Hubert Hurkacz retired while trailing 4-6, 2-3. Novak Djokovic was set to meet Daniil Medvedev in the other semi-final after Djokovic extended his unbeaten Beijing run to 32 matches by defeating Alexander Zverev.
