Iga Swiatek was forced to withdraw from the third round of the Madrid Open after falling ill, while Aryna Sabalenka continued her impressive run by securing a 14th consecutive victory on Saturday.
Swiatek, who lifted the Madrid title in 2024, fought back strongly after losing the opening set against American player Ann Li. However, her comeback was cut short as she trailed 0-3 in the deciding set before deciding she could not continue. The Polish star requested medical attention early in the third set, with doctors checking her condition after she showed signs of discomfort. Although she attempted to regain momentum, she ultimately had to retire as her physical condition worsened.
Following the match, Swiatek revealed she had been battling a stomach virus for two days. Despite feeling unwell, she had hoped to push through and find a way to win. She explained that she had been experiencing severe fatigue and instability, making it impossible to compete at her usual level. The early exit marks her earliest departure in five appearances at the Madrid tournament, a disappointing outcome given her strong form leading into the event.
In contrast, Sabalenka delivered a commanding performance to reach the last 16, defeating Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian in straight sets. The reigning champion was particularly dominant in the opening set, showcasing exceptional serving efficiency and control. Cristian raised her level in the second set, but Sabalenka secured a crucial break late on to seal the win.
Known for her powerful playing style, Sabalenka also displayed creativity during the match, including an eye-catching one-handed backhand passing shot and a delicate drop shot to close out the contest. She later described her performance as one of her best, highlighting the quality of her play in the opening set.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Canada’s Leylah Fernandez staged a comeback victory over Iva Jovic to progress, setting up a meeting with Ann Li in the next round. Meanwhile, Russia’s Mirra Andreeva overcame Hungary’s Dalma Galfi in straight sets, recovering from early breaks in both sets to continue her strong clay-court form this season. She will next face Anna Bondar.
On the men’s side, defending champion Casper Ruud produced a dominant display, comfortably defeating Jaume Munar with the loss of just one game. He will now take on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the next round.
Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev began his campaign with a mixed performance, overcoming Mariano Navone in three sets. Despite a strong start, Zverev admitted to losing focus during the match but managed to regain control in the deciding set. He will next face Terence Atmane, who advanced after a hard-fought win over Ugo Humbert in an all-French encounter.
