Iga Swiatek booked her place in the Cincinnati Open semifinals on Thursday after world No. 2 Elena Rybakina was forced to retire from their quarterfinal with an injury. Swiatek was leading 4-1 in the opening set when the Kazakh stopped playing after experiencing discomfort around her left ankle.
Rybakina called for the trainer after pulling up during the fifth game and briefly returned to the court before deciding she could not continue. Her early exit has raised concerns about her fitness with the US Open scheduled to begin in New York on August 30.
Swiatek expressed sympathy for her opponent, saying health was more important than the Cincinnati tournament and hoping Rybakina would recover in time for the final Grand Slam of the season. The Polish star has also gained momentum in recent weeks after winning the Canadian Open in Toronto.
The result means Swiatek, the defending Cincinnati champion, will meet Jessica Pegula in the semifinals. The third-ranked American earned her place in the last four by overcoming Amanda Anisimova 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(4) in a closely contested all-American quarterfinal.
Pegula extended her perfect record against Anisimova to 6-0 after recovering from losing the second set and surrendering a 5-3 advantage in the decider. She eventually held her nerve in the tiebreak to seal victory and set up another meeting with Swiatek.
In the men's tournament, Flavio Cobolli reached the semifinals by fighting back from a set down to defeat Tommy Paul 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. The Italian will face Arthur Fils, who defeated Thiago Tirante 6-3, 6-2 in just 64 minutes.
