Swiatek, Gauff, Sabalenka win Cincinnati Masters

Posted : 17 August 2023
Iga Swiatek, the reigning US Open champion, showcased her impressive form this season by comfortably defeating Danielle Collins in the round of 32 match at the Cincinnati Masters in Ohio. Swiatek's victory was well-earned, and she continues to demonstrate her prowess on the court. Likewise, world No. 7 Coco Gauff secured a smooth win, while Aryna Sabalenka encountered a tougher challenge but managed to advance. Elena Rybakina also emerged victorious against Jelena Ostapenko.
Coco Gauff exhibited her dominance by swiftly defeating Mayar Sherif with a convincing score of 6-2, 6-2 in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters. Having progressed directly to the second round due to a first-round bye, Gauff efficiently dispatched her opponent in just 80 minutes. She capitalized on a break in the first set's fourth game to secure a 3-1 lead and later defended against two breaks in the second set's opening game. By breaking Sherif twice and maintaining her own serve in the last three games, Gauff sealed her triumph, ensuring her advancement to round three. Her next challenge is a match against Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic on Friday.
Aryna Sabalenka, ranked No. 2 in the world, faced a more formidable test against American qualifier Ann Li, eventually triumphing with a score of 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. Sabalenka, a semi-finalist in the previous year, showcased her resilience, particularly in the third set, to secure victory on her third match point. Reflecting on the match, she acknowledged the challenge posed by Li, who had gained an advantage due to playing more matches on the surface. Despite the difficulties, Sabalenka expressed her satisfaction with the win.
Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, navigated through a competitive match against Jelena Ostapenko, prevailing with a score of 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-4. While Ostapenko mounted an impressive comeback in the tie-break of the first set, Rybakina regained control and clinched the following two sets, securing her victory. Rybakina now prepares to face Jasmine Paolini in the next round.
In other matches, Jessica Pegula overcame Martina Trevisan with a score of 6-7(2-7), 6-2, 6-3, securing her place in the last 16 of the Cincinnati Masters. Likewise, Iga Swiatek secured a resounding victory over Danielle Collins with a score of 6-1, 6-0. Swiatek's performance was dominant, reflecting her strong form as she readies herself for the upcoming US Open.
As the tennis season progresses, players like Pegula are maintaining their momentum. Pegula's recent win in Montreal, despite facing health challenges, adds to her confidence as she looks forward to future matches. Her growing confidence and strategic approach have contributed to her recent successes. With each match, the players showcase their skills, adaptability, and determination as they compete on the international stage.
