Swiatek, Gauff, and Sinner Advance; Tsitsipas Stunned in Australian Open First Round

Posted : 13 January 2025

Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff both advanced to the second round of the Australian Open, showcasing strong performances in their opening matches. Swiatek, ranked No. 2 in the world, defeated Czech doubles specialist Katerina Siniakova 6-3, 6-4 on John Cain Arena, securing her place in the next stage.

The Polish player, who has won five Grand Slam titles, expressed relief at making it through a tough first round, although her best performance at Melbourne Park remains a semifinal appearance in 2022.

Meanwhile, Gauff, ranked No. 3, continued her impressive form by comfortably defeating former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin 6-3, 6-3 in just 80 minutes. The 2023 US Open champion remains undefeated in 2024 after leading the United States to victory in the United Cup, and she expressed satisfaction with her performance, recognizing the challenge of facing Kenin, the 2020 Melbourne winner.

In a surprising result, former finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas was knocked out in the first round by American Alex Michelsen, ranked No. 42 in the world. Tsitsipas' loss was one of the day's major upsets as the Greek player was eliminated early.

On the men's side, world No. 1 Jannik Sinner also faced scrutiny due to a doping controversy, after testing positive for traces of a steroid in March. Despite being cleared by tennis authorities, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has appealed the decision and is seeking a potential two-year ban.

Sinner, however, powered into the second round with a dominant win over Chile's Nicolas Jarry, securing a 7-6 (7/2), 7-6 (7/5), 6-1 victory on Rod Laver Arena. Sinner, who has not lost since his defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in the Beijing final, commented on the close nature of the first two sets before breaking away in the third.

Meanwhile, former Australian Open champions Victoria Azarenka and Naomi Osaka were among the early casualties, with Azarenka losing to Italy's Lucia Bronzetti, and Osaka set to face Caroline Garcia later in the day.
