Aryna Sabalenka will square off against Iga Swiatek in a much-anticipated French Open semi-final as the two top contenders continue their march toward the title. Sabalenka overcame a tough challenge from Zheng Qinwen, winning 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 on a windy Court Philippe Chatrier.
Despite struggling early on and dropping an early break, the Belarusian found her rhythm, fought back to level the set, and eventually took control, especially as Zheng faltered with 31 unforced errors. With this win, Sabalenka advanced to her second consecutive semi-final at Roland Garros, maintaining her strong season form, which includes three titles and two other finals.
Swiatek, who is chasing a fifth French Open crown, defeated Elina Svitolina 6-1, 7-5 in her quarter-final match. After a relatively comfortable first set where she reeled off five consecutive games, Swiatek was tested more in the second set as Svitolina briefly led 3-1.
However, the Polish star responded quickly, reclaiming the break and controlling the match’s tempo. Known for her composure in tight moments, Swiatek’s win marks yet another deep run in Paris, where she has consistently thrived over the past few years. Her recent victory over Elena Rybakina earlier in the tournament has only added to her momentum.
This upcoming clash between Sabalenka and Swiatek will be their first Grand Slam meeting since the 2022 US Open semi-finals. Though Swiatek leads their head-to-head record 8-4, Sabalenka’s current form and ranking suggest a fierce contest is ahead.
Swiatek acknowledged her opponent's versatility, stating she must stay aggressive and brave to overcome Sabalenka. With both players at the top of their games and a place in the final at stake, this semi-final promises to be a compelling battle between two of the sport's most dominant figures.
