Steve Darcis Leads Belgium to Davis Cup Semifinal After Historic Career

Posted : 19 November 2025

Steve Darcis may forever be remembered for his stunning first-round victory over Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon in 2013, but for Belgian tennis fans, he is more likely celebrated as “Mr. Davis Cup.” Over a 12-year playing career in the competition, Darcis won 23 of his 35 singles rubbers, including the decisive match that propelled Belgium past Argentina in the 2015 semifinal.

He was also instrumental in Belgium’s run to the 2017 final, where the team fell to France after Darcis again played the decisive fifth rubber. Now 41, Darcis has transitioned from player to captain, guiding Belgium back to the semifinals following a 2-0 quarterfinal victory over France in Bologna on Tuesday. Though no longer on the court, his presence on the sidelines proved crucial as Raphael Collignon and Zizou Bergs defeated higher-ranked opponents to secure the win.

Collignon, ranked 86th in the world, credited Darcis’ guidance for his performance. “The bench helped me a lot,” he said, reflecting on his comeback from a set down against Corentin Moutet. “My coach and captain also helped me. When I’m doubting or struggling, he has the right words.” Collignon has now claimed three singles wins for Belgium this Davis Cup season, following victories over Alex de Minaur and Aleksandar Vukic as the team stunned Australia in September to reach the Final Eight.

Collignon also described his lifelong dream of playing for Belgium. “Since I was a kid, I watched every tie, following my idols like David Goffin and Steve, my current captain. It started as a dream and became a goal as I improved and climbed the rankings,” he said.

Looking ahead, Darcis will lead the Belgian squad, nicknamed the Red Aces, into a semifinal clash against either host and defending champion Italy or Austria. While Belgium may not boast the star power of some other teams, Darcis remains optimistic about their chances. “Italy is missing its top players, Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti, but they’re still a fantastic team. In the Davis Cup, anything can happen. We’ll give it our all on Friday and aim to make history,” he said.
