Stan Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, received a wildcard for the 2025 Australian Open, marking his return to the tournament he first competed in nearly 20 years ago. The 39-year-old Swiss player won the title at Melbourne Park in 2014, defeating Rafael Nadal in the final, which propelled him to world No. 3 and earned him his first Grand Slam victory. He would go on to claim more major titles, including Roland Garros in 2015 and the US Open in 2016.
Wawrinka expressed his gratitude for the wildcard, acknowledging the special significance Melbourne holds in his career. "It's where I won my first Grand Slam and is one of the greatest milestones of my career," he said. The veteran has struggled with injuries in recent years, causing his ranking to fall, but this wildcard entry gives him a chance to add another chapter to his legacy at the Australian Open.
In addition to Wawrinka, eight Australians, including Daria Saville and Ajla Tomljanovic, also received wildcards for the tournament. Zhang Shuai from China and Thailand's Kasidit Samrej earned direct entry into the main draw after securing victories in the Asia-Pacific playoffs. The 2025 Australian Open will be held from January 12-26.
