Stan Wawrinka brought his long association with the Monte Carlo Masters closer to an end after a straight-sets defeat to Sebastian Baez in the first round. The 41-year-old, who claimed the title in 2014, is set to retire at the end of the season and entered this year’s event as a wild card, two decades after his debut.
Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, reflected on his memorable triumph in Monaco, where he defeated Roger Federer to lift his only ATP Masters 1000 title. Despite showing flashes of his quality and racing into an early lead in the opening set, he was unable to maintain momentum as Baez fought back to take control of the match.
The Argentine recovered from a slow start, leveling the first set before breaking serve at a crucial moment and carrying that momentum into the second. Although Wawrinka mounted a late push, Baez held firm to secure victory in straight sets and advance to the next round, where he will face world number one Carlos Alcaraz.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Stefanos Tsitsipas suffered an early exit, while Andrey Rublev progressed after a three-set battle. Other winners included Arthur Rinderknech and Jiri Lehecka, as the opening rounds delivered several notable results.
