Sorana Cirstea Continues Dream Run to Reach Italian Open Semifinals at 36

Posted : 13 May 2026

Sorana Cirstea produced another inspired performance at the Italian Open, defeating former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 6-1, 7-6(0) to secure a place in the semifinals. The 36-year-old Romanian continues to defy expectations during what she has described as a farewell season on the tour.

Cirstea will now face Coco Gauff in the last four after the American battled past Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva in a three-set contest, winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Gauff had to recover from a slow start but ultimately showed resilience to extend her strong form in Rome.

For Cirstea, her latest victory adds to a remarkable week that already included one of the tournament’s biggest upsets, a straight-sets win over world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the third round. The result has placed her one win away from breaking into the top 20 for the first time in her career, surpassing her previous peak ranking of 21 achieved in 2013.

Speaking after her win, Cirstea reflected on her enduring passion for the sport, stating that ambition and determination have no age limit. She expressed gratitude for her journey and said she is fully enjoying her final season on tour, especially her run in Rome.

Her clay-court form this season has been impressive, with only two losses coming against Gauff in Madrid and Andreeva in Linz. Despite a brief injury setback earlier in the year, she has returned strongly to deliver one of the most surprising runs of the tournament.

Gauff, meanwhile, maintained her perfect record against Andreeva, securing her fifth win in as many meetings. Although she let slip a large lead in the deciding set, she managed to close out the match after several tense games, acknowledging afterwards that she still has lessons to learn in finishing matches more cleanly.

With both Cirstea and Gauff advancing, the Italian Open semifinals promise a compelling clash between experience and youth as the tournament reaches its decisive stage.
