Kartal has enjoyed a remarkable return to competitive tennis after spending six months away from the WTA Tour because of a stress fracture in her back. The 24-year-old British player saw her world ranking fall from 54 to 170 during the absence. However, her impressive performances at the Wuhan Open have quickly restored her momentum.
The decision to return through high-level tournaments in China rather than rebuild her confidence at lower-ranked events has proved successful. Kartal used her protected ranking to enter major competitions and test herself against some of the strongest players in women's tennis.
Her latest achievement came on Friday, October 16, when she defeated world number six Elina Svitolina 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in the quarter-finals. The victory secured her first semi-final appearance at a WTA 1000 tournament and marked her second career win against a top-10 opponent.
Kartal made a confident start against Svitolina, taking the opening set 6-2 with aggressive baseline play and consistent hitting. The Ukrainian responded in the second set, winning by the same score after receiving medical treatment on her right arm.
The deciding set proved more competitive. Both players held serve through the first nine games, leaving Kartal needing one decisive opportunity to secure the match. She broke Svitolina at 5-4 and converted the chance to complete a memorable victory after just over two hours of play.
The win continued a strong run in Wuhan. Kartal had already defeated Switzerland's Belinda Bencic, the 2021 Olympic champion, and Italy's Jasmine Paolini, a two-time Grand Slam finalist in 2024. She beat Paolini 6-2, 6-0 in the round of 16 before overcoming Svitolina in the next round.
Since returning to competition in September, Kartal has shown that her long absence has not diminished her ability to compete at the highest level. Her performances have also reinforced the value of patience and determination during recovery from a serious injury.
Kartal described the Wuhan campaign as one of the best weeks of her career, highlighting her satisfaction with the consistency she has maintained throughout the tournament. She also praised the atmosphere on court and acknowledged the challenge of facing Svitolina, whom she regarded as a formidable competitor.
The achievement places Kartal in a select group of British players. She is only the second British woman, after Johanna Konta, to reach a WTA 1000 semi-final since the format began in 2009.
Kartal's next challenge is former French Open champion Jeļena Ostapenko, who reached the semi-finals after defeating Diana Shnaider. The match offers Kartal another opportunity to extend her comeback and move closer to a major title.
Her run in Wuhan has already demonstrated that she can compete with established stars despite her current ranking. A place in the final would represent another significant milestone in her return from injury.
