British tennis player Sonay Kartal has made history at the Wuhan Open, defeating Jelena Ostapenko 7-6 (11-9), 7-6 (7-5) on Saturday to secure her place in the final. Ranked 170th in the world, the 24-year-old has become the lowest-ranked player to reach a WTA 1000 final since the format was introduced in 2009.
Kartal's achievement is particularly remarkable given her recent injury struggles. She spent six months away from competition after suffering a stress fracture in her back, which kept her sidelined from March until September. Having previously reached a career-high ranking of 44, she has made an impressive return to the tour in just her second tournament since recovering.
The semifinal against Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open champion, tested Kartal's composure and resilience. Despite facing repeated pressure from the Latvian's aggressive hitting, the Briton held her nerve in both sets to complete a straight-sets victory and reach the biggest final of her career.
Kartal acknowledged the difficulty of the encounter, describing it as one of the toughest matches she had played. She explained that dealing with Ostapenko's unpredictable and powerful game required patience and mental strength, adding that she was particularly proud of her performance under pressure.
The victory continued an outstanding run in Wuhan, where Kartal had already defeated several seeded opponents, including Elina Svitolina and Belinda Bencic. She also overcame Jasmine Paolini, further demonstrating her ability to compete against established players despite her ranking.
Kartal recovered from a double-break deficit in the opening set and saved two set points before winning the tiebreak. She showed similar determination in the second set, fighting back from 1-4 down and saving three set points to seal her place in the final.
The British player will now face either six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek or fellow Polish player Maja Chwalinska in Sunday's championship match. A victory would give Kartal the biggest title of her career and cap an extraordinary comeback from injury.
