Sinner Dominates Madrid Open as Kostyuk Claims Breakthrough WTA 1000 Title

Posted : 04 May 2026

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner delivered a commanding performance to defeat Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-2 and secure his first Madrid Open title. The Italian extended his remarkable form, capturing a fifth straight Masters 1000 crown and stretching his winning streak to 23 matches in emphatic fashion.

With this victory, Sinner joins elite company, as only Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic have previously managed to win four consecutive titles at this level. Despite the milestone, Sinner remained grounded, emphasizing his focus on personal growth rather than records.

The match itself was one-sided from the outset. Sinner broke early to take control, racing into a 3-0 lead before tightening his grip with another break. Zverev struggled to find rhythm, managing only brief resistance as the Italian’s powerful serving and improved variety, including well-timed drop shots, proved too much. Sinner wrapped up the opening set with authority and continued his dominance in the second, sealing the title with a flawless service game.

Zverev, a former Madrid champion, showed glimpses of resilience in the second set but could not match Sinner’s consistency and intensity. The Italian’s relentless baseline play and precision ensured there was no path back for his opponent, completing a dominant fortnight where no rival came close to stopping him.

Elsewhere in the women’s competition, Marta Kostyuk celebrated a milestone moment by winning her first WTA 1000 title. The Ukrainian defeated Mirra Andreeva in a hard-fought final, marking her second title of the season and confirming her rise on the tour.

Kostyuk displayed composure and power throughout the match, taking the opening set after breaking early and capitalizing on her opponent’s errors. Although Andreeva responded strongly in the second set, the contest remained tightly contested, with both players exchanging breaks and momentum.

In a dramatic conclusion, Kostyuk showed resilience under pressure, saving set points before earning the opportunity to serve for the title. Despite missing her first two championship points, she held her nerve to clinch victory when Andreeva’s final shot drifted long, sparking emotional celebrations.

The triumph marked a significant breakthrough for Kostyuk, who credited consistency and perseverance as key factors in her success. For Andreeva, the defeat was a rare setback in a season that has otherwise showcased her rapid development and growing presence at the top level.
