Sinner Stops Jodar’s Breakthrough Run to Reach Historic Madrid Semifinal

Posted : 30 April 2026

World number one Jannik Sinner brought an end to the impressive run of teenage sensation Rafael Jodar with a 6-2, 7-6 (7/0) victory at the Madrid Open on Wednesday. The win marked a significant milestone for Sinner, as he became one of the few players to reach the semifinals at all nine Masters 1000 tournaments.

Jodar, just 19, has enjoyed a remarkable rise during the clay season. The Spanish youngster claimed his first ATP title in Marrakesh, followed it with a semifinal appearance in Barcelona, and reached the quarterfinals in Madrid. His rapid ascent is even more striking considering that a year ago he was competing in college tennis at the University of Virginia and ranked outside the top 600. He is now set to break into the world’s top 35 when the latest rankings are released.

Despite the straight-sets result, Sinner was pushed hard throughout the match. The Italian faced multiple challenges on serve, including a lengthy game early in the first set where he had to fend off two break points. Jodar’s powerful forehand and fearless approach kept the contest competitive, forcing Sinner to stay sharp to secure the opening set.

After the match, Sinner praised his young opponent but cautioned against placing excessive expectations on him. He highlighted Jodar’s talent, strong support system, and promising future, while emphasizing the importance of allowing the teenager to develop without undue pressure.

The second set proved even tighter, with Jodar drawing energy from a lively home crowd. He created five break-point opportunities but was unable to capitalize, as Sinner held firm to level the set. The contest ultimately went to a tiebreak, where Sinner took complete control, winning the final 11 points of the match to seal victory and book his place in the semifinals.

Sinner will next face Arthur Fils, who advanced after defeating Jiri Lehecka in straight sets. Fils arrives in strong form, having recently won the Barcelona title and maintaining an unbeaten record on clay this season.
