World number one Jannik Sinner begins his pursuit of a first Roland Garros title and a potential career Grand Slam on Tuesday, opening his French Open campaign against French wildcard Clément Tabur.
Sinner enters the tournament as the clear favourite in the men’s draw, boosted by the absence of injured rival Carlos Alcaraz. The Italian arrives in Paris in outstanding form, riding a 29-match winning streak and fresh off a dominant clay-court season that includes multiple Masters 1000 titles.
He recently completed a clean sweep of all nine ATP Masters 1000 events after winning in Rome, adding to earlier clay triumphs in Monte Carlo and Madrid. His last defeat came in February, underlining his strong momentum heading into the season’s second Grand Slam.
Despite his status as top seed, Sinner remains cautious about the challenges ahead, noting that best-of-five set matches require patience and adaptability, especially when facing lower-ranked opponents eager to cause upsets.
In the women’s draw, defending champion Coco Gauff begins her campaign against fellow American Taylor Townsend. Gauff, the fourth seed, is aiming to build on her strong record at Roland Garros, where she has consistently performed well compared to other Grand Slam events.
Although she has shown flashes of form this season, including a run to the Italian Open final, Gauff has acknowledged that she is not focused on past success in Paris as she starts her title defence.
Elsewhere in the women’s draw, world number one Aryna Sabalenka begins her quest for a first French Open title after mixed recent form, while Naomi Osaka and other rising stars also feature in a competitive opening round.
The tournament also carries historical significance, with Italian legend Adriano Panatta reflecting on the possibility of Sinner ending Italy’s long wait for a Roland Garros men’s champion, 50 years after his own triumph in Paris.
As the French Open gets underway, attention will be firmly on whether Sinner can continue his dominant run and whether Gauff can successfully defend her crown on the Paris clay.
