Sinner Reflects Positively on Rome Final Loss to Alcaraz Ahead of Roland Garros

Posted : 19 May 2025

Jannik Sinner expressed satisfaction with his overall performance at the Italian Open, despite falling to Carlos Alcaraz in the final. The match marked Sinner’s return to competition after a three-month hiatus following a doping suspension.

In the final, Alcaraz rallied from two set points down in the opening set before securing a 7-6 (7/5), 6-1 win, ending Sinner’s 26-match unbeaten run. Despite the result, Sinner said the tournament gave him confidence ahead of Roland Garros and highlighted the significance of playing in front of a home crowd in Rome.

The 23-year-old had not competed since winning the Australian Open in January. His absence stemmed from a doping ban issued after tests showed traces of clostebol, a substance he was found to have accidentally ingested.

Sinner acknowledged the emotional support from Italian fans throughout the tournament, describing the experience as “very special.” He admitted there were areas of his game that needed improvement, particularly after facing Alcaraz, but was encouraged by his progress given the long break from competitive play.

Sinner noted that while he played some matches at a high level, others left room for growth, and that inconsistency is part of the sport. The defeat extended Alcaraz’s head-to-head lead over Sinner to 7-4, which includes last year’s epic five-set semifinal clash at Roland Garros.

Although he had originally planned to compete in Hamburg next week, Sinner announced he would instead take time to rest and prepare for the French Open, considering the physical and mental demands of his Rome campaign.

Reflecting on the final, Sinner admitted he would approach certain points differently if given another chance, particularly the missed set points in the first set. Still, he made no excuses, attributing the loss to a lack of recent match play.

The world No. 1 emphasized the importance of recharging before Roland Garros, stating he would use the upcoming week to reset mentally and fine-tune his game for what he described as an “even more important tournament” in Paris.
